Christian Science has been my only physician and benefactor for about forty-one years and has brought me through many severe trials. Our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has given us this loving assurance in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (pp.149,150): "Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee."
One severe experience confronted my husband and me when we were returning home from Europe. The plane we were on suddenly dived downward, crashing against a mudbank of the Shannon River. We were in complete darkness, and the plane began to sink into the river. We felt no fear; instead, we began to declare aloud that God is Love, Life, and the only presence. We recalled a statement by Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health, p. 290), "Life is the everlasting I am, the Being who was and is and shall be, whom nothing can erase."
Shortly after this I was showered with the high octane gasoline from the tank which had broken open above my seat. Soon I felt as though I were becoming asphyxiated, but I continued to declare the truth. I was enabled to follow my husband as he walked in the aisle with water rising to our knees.
