Christian Science was brought to our attention over thirty years ago in those faraway islands now called Indonesia, where a consecrated Dutch practitioner opened the spiritual door in my thought and let in a flood of light. The doctors had said to my husband that they could not do anything more for him. He had been through World War I, which had left him with many physical difficulties. My mother, who was visiting us at the time and who saw my distress, said to me: "Go and talk to a Christian Science practitioner. I hear they heal people through prayer."
I remember saying to the practitioner as I sat in her room, "What a wonderful faith, one which encourages you to think of God every moment of each day instead of on Sundays only or when you pray to Him dutifully morning and evening!"
It struck me at once what a practical faith it is, and it has proved to be just that to us all these years. It healed my husband and helped us through the years of so-called depression in England in the thirties. It supplied us both with positions when it seemed almost hopeless to find work.
