In 1938, while I was attending a Middle Western university, my mother wrote to me of her introduction to a new religion and said that it was freeing her of severe physical difficulty. This new religion was Christian Science. I was not prepared for the surprise awaiting me when I returned home during the vacation period. Instead of seeing my mother ill and depressed, I was greeted by her, and she expressed health and joy. This made a profound impression on me and was the reason for my investigating, and later becoming a student of, Christian Science. Since that time, I have had numerous healings.
Approximately four years ago I was troubled with a condition which probably would be called bleeding piles. Periodically, the difficulty tried to argue that it was real. It became necessary for me to realize that I must be "absent from the body, and . . . be present with the Lord" (II Cor. 5:8). To me this included in its meaning the necessity to cease giving anxious attention to bodily functions. A practitioner supported me in realizing my real identity as the image and likeness of God. When I stopped watching the body, the healing came and has been complete. I do not even know when I gained my freedom.
I am also thankful for the healing of overaction of the kidneys. This statement in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy was a bulwark to me (p. 393): "Take possession of your body, and govern its feeling and action. Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man."
