THE increasing attention given by the medical faculty to the probing for mental causes of illness has resulted in a comparatively new field of inquiry called psychosomatic medicine. Many volumes have come off the press dealing with various phases of the mental cause of illness and with experiments in the psychological treatment of disease. It is interesting to note that with the acknowledgment that physical illness is often caused by discordant mental states, the world is gradually turning its thought to mental therapy for treatment.
This is of especial interest to students of Christian Science, who are learning to prove through their study and application of the truth that scientific healing is brought about solely through the power of God, divine Mind. They have found that merely substituting better mental conditions for sick or destructive mental states is not sufficient to heal disease permanently.
The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy, after long years of testing many theories in her quest for healing, concluded that the answer lay in a spiritual perception of the Bible, especially of the works of Christ Jesus. After demonstrating for herself and others man's true being as the image and likeness of God, she set about the task of stating this revolutionary method of healing in a form that could reach and bless all mankind. The textbook, Science and Health, used by students of Christian Science in conjunction with the Bible, was the result.
