Poems

To the Avant-garde

Genesis 19

From the November 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Salt is the tear. And salt solidified
Who disobeyed, who vainly tried
To tie the outgrown to the new,
Refused complete acceptance of the now.

You with wings beneath you, who have cut
Loose from the tumbril, from the rut
Of chariot wheel, why twist your neck
And get off course by constant looking back?

Your Sodom and Gomorrah left behind,
The false abandoned, and your mind
Fixed on the true, equipped with Science,
Delivered now from obsolescence,

You, now assigned to overcome restriction
Of time and space, pledged to eviction
Of pain, of grief, of limitation;
You are the avant-garde of world expansion!
