In human experience we sometimes encounter disappointments, frustrations, little nagging errors. We may reach for perfection, but not quite attain what our heart desires. We may wish that we enjoyed the state of health, peace, or security which others have. We may feel that we fall short of the maximum of success that we should like to attain. And yet were we possessed of the apparent desirable conditions of others, we might still find ourselves coveting the standard of those who are, to our eyes, better off than we are.
What is the answer to the desire for betterment, according to the teachings of Christian Science? A seeking of the kingdom of God, the kingdom of divine consciousness, in which there is no mediocrity, only spiritual perfection. No error is possible in real being. The claim of the existence of evil is contrary to the law of God and is ruled out of our experience as we grow in spiritual comprehension of the nature of real being.
That we evidence in a measure health, security, and peace indicates that they actually exist and that they are possible of greater demonstration in our lives. But we cannot evidence these desirable qualities in our experience merely by endeavoring through material means to improve a physical situation. The way to true health is not through material methods, through wishing for health, or through looking with envy on the well-being of others. Health is an immortal quality of God, reflected eternally by man, and it is to be gained in our lives only by spiritual means.
