What a joy it is to be a student of Christian Science! Having been reared in a home where Science was the only physician or help in any need, I was blessed beyond words. Among my blessings was a college education which had seemed nearly impossible. In my senior year at college the blessing of service as Second Reader in a branch church brought great growth and humility. It opened the way for employment as a teacher in a distant state, a state which rigidly ruled out all out-of-state, inexperienced teachers. The placement bureau at the college had not been able to secure a position for me as a teacher.
My parents were moving to the distant state mentioned, and, through my study of the Bible and of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I was directed to accompany them. I held firmly to the truth of God's directing. I knew that all God's ideas express right activity. On making application in the teaching profession when we arrived at our destination, I was informed that there were several hundred applications ahead of mine. This situation had a grim visage, but with Paul I declared over and over (Acts 20:24), "None of these things move me."
Two weeks after school had started I felt directed to go to a neighboring city to request a fellowship for further training in my chosen field. When I arrived, I found that the fellowship had been awarded to another. However, while I was there, I made application for teaching in the public schools. On returning home, I lovingly and willingly took over many of the humble duties of the home. In less than a week an urgent call from this neighboring city brought me full-time employment as a teacher in the public school system, a position I held, with gratitude, for six years without a day or an hour of absence from duty.
