Two years ago I was healed of a painful skin condition that caused blisters, mostly on my hands and legs. A Christian Science practitioner was helping me, and I pondered many passages from the Bible, and from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, including this one (p. 297): "Erroneous belief is destroyed by truth. Change the evidence, and that disappears which before seemed real to this false belief, and the human consciousness rises higher. Thus the reality of being is attained and man found to be immortal." These truths gave me dominion over the belief of pain and intense itching.
For a time I had my hands bandaged by Christian Science nurses, who worked quickly and skillfully. They also rebuked my tendency toward self-condemnation and guilt trips, and comforted me with spiritual truths. This gave me joy, even during the more trying moments. When I look back on that bond of love between fellow Scientists, my gratitude is quickened, and I'm thankful to be a Scientist too. It's rewarding to remind ourselves of the good of which we are capable, and to do good to others.
During this period I had a quick healing that gave me encouragement to keep studying and praying. I found a small hard lump in my neck and a smaller one in my cheek. There was pain, and I was scared. I even contemplated going to a doctor for a diagnosis to aid me in knowing the specific error that needed attention through prayer. But Mrs. Eddy states (Science and Health, p. 370), "A physical diagnosis of disease—since mortal mind must be the cause of disease—tends to induce disease." After considering this I knew that the medical route wasn't the right path for me to choose.
