Christian Science nursing: Manual-directed care

From the November 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A chief function of the Christian Science nurse is to cherish—in other words, to exercise tenderness and affection, and in this way to nurture with care. Is there anyone who does not glow and grow under this kind of nursing?

The office of the Christian Science nurse is provided for by Mrs. Eddy in the Manual of The Mother Church, Article VIII, Section 31. The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science realized that while her young Church was learning again the lost art of Christian healing, on some occasions temporary nursing would be needed.

Our Leader gave the basis for raising the office of the nurse to spiritual altitudes when she taught, "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." The statement concludes with, "Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual." Science and Health, p. 468; While nurturing the body with care and ministering to human needs, the Christian Science nurse is expressing tenderness. This dual role is practiced in the profession of nursing by individuals, male or female, whose love for God overflows into practical caring.
