Good carpenters

From the November 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A young man asked whether he could use his understanding of Christian Science to make himself a better hairdresser.

This question is often asked in many different forms. The answer is that a human career can never be the ultimate objective of spiritual progress, but it is always a beneficiary of spiritual growth. Spiritual progress doesn't mean a retreat from legitimate human activities, but an enrichment of them.

Mrs. Eddy, speaking of the Christ Science, says: "This action of the divine energy, even if not acknowledged, has come to be seen as diffusing richest blessings. This spiritual idea, or Christ, entered into the minutiæ of the life of the personal Jesus. It made him an honest man, a good carpenter, and a good man, before it could make him the glorified."
