I learned of Christian Science while I was in college, although I did not take up its study at first. During the spring term of my junior year, I developed stomach pains. Near the end of the term they became so unbearable that I went to see our family doctor as soon as I got home, and I continued visiting him weekly. When the fall school term approached, at the doctor's suggestion I underwent three days of examinations at a large clinic in a distant city. They were unable to find a reason for the pains; but they recommended that I not return to school and provided me with a rigid diet. After a year at home I was unimproved, so I returned to school despite the stomach trouble.
While I was home for Christmas vacation, the mother of a Christian Scientist I had dated once called me long-distance. She said that their daughter was very ill and asked if I would come visit her. With my parents' permission, I took the train the following day and arrived at the girl's home just a few minutes before a Christian Science practitioner came to see her. Around midnight, when the practitioner was leaving, I asked her a few questions about Science. Our talk lasted two hours and was very satisfying. I did not tell her about the stomach problem; but I knew that when I returned to school I was going to visit a Christian Science practitioner, rather than seek further medical attention.
The next day, after I had shared a large noon meal with the family, someone noted that I had just eaten the same food as the family. I couldn't believe it! I had forgotten all about my rigid diet, although it had been over two years since I had eaten regular food. The meal was digested without difficulty, and that was the end of the stomach trouble. From then on, I enjoyed eating.
