When night comes

From the February 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What does one do if a mental night comes, if thought is filled with doubt— even intimations of death itself? Much depends on what he has been doing.

If he has been cultivating his spiritual understanding through study and prayer and practice, he is aware of a tested inner light that will see him through—perhaps without the help of another. If he has been idle, or more involved with other things, such help may be essential. Either way, he's not lost in the dark, for, according to John, the light of Christ "lighteth every man that cometh into the world."John 1:9

At any time, anyone may find this spiritual light. Actually, it's the light that illumines his own life, the spiritual truth revealing his own true identity. By this light, he is able to see that there is nothing to fear, that reality is God-made and good, that the true, complete identity of man has no capacity for fear.
