Can we actuate God's control?

From the February 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For highway driving, my car has a useful attachment called cruise control. By activating this control I can cause the car to operate at a constant speed. Although always available, cruise control cannot affect the car's engine until I engage it. Then it takes charge.

What about God's control over the affairs of mankind? Do we think God is an ever-available power standing by, waiting for us to do something which will cause Him to direct His government to benefit the one who has sought His help?

Christian Science—God's law—shows that God is omnipotent and omniactive, always governing all in perfect harmony. This being the fact, it would be presumptuous to suppose that by appealing to God we could actuate His control and cause Him to do something He was not already doing. Even the belief that God's constant care is available but that we have to plug into it, as one avails himself of the power of an electric circuit, implies that divine Life, Truth, and Love are a potential source of good but that they are waiting for us to call on them. The fact is that God's law is always in operation.
