A fresh sense of Soul

From the May 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the signs of our times is jaded materialism. Many people feel surfeited with material sensation, material pursuits, material analysis. Such pursuits soon become monotonous, and a kind of nihilism pervades human consciousness. Or perhaps a narcissism results, a self-love, that soon wears thin. It's no wonder that individuals often have a restless feeling, forever reaching out for something new on the material scene: sex experimentation, drugs, hallucination. What's really needed is a fresh perception of Soul.

We can wake up to the fact that material sense does not provide joy, inspiration, vitality, newness of life. Freshness and variety are actually divine attributes. They are evidences of God's presence. They reflect the infinite nature of Soul, or Spirit. When one really wants a "lift" let him seek it in Soul.

Soul is sometimes interpreted as an indwelling spirit, something that dwells in the material body somewhere. And then from this standpoint individuals interpret soul through the material senses. They seek their joy through material sensation. They look to corporeal personality for their good. This is a false sense. Soul is not to be found in body. Soul is the one infinite, purely spiritual, creative intelligence that governs the universe. Soul is reflected in man as God's likeness. To realize the resources of Soul, one must turn away from material sense to spiritual sense.
