A Christian Science practitioner introduced this system of healing to my parents with a simple request: "Tonight take your Bible and study the Lord's Prayer and the ninety-first Psalm." At the time, my father had been told by several company doctors that he would never walk again. Unwilling to accept that verdict as final, he had the cast on his leg and hip soaked off and that night followed the practitioner's recommendation to study those passages from the Gospels and Psalms. The next morning he walked without aid into the kitchen, and as soon as one of the company physicians confirmed the healing, my father went back to work. Both of my parents remained sincere in their study of Christian Science, giving their children the advantage of attending the Christian Science Sunday School as well as learning to demonstrate its practical effects in their daily lives.
My husband was not a Christian Scientist, but when our son was born, he readily agreed to have Christian Science treatment for any of the child's illnesses and to allow him to attend the Christian Science Sunday School.
One morning, when this son was about five years old, he called to me and said he couldn't get up. I knew we would have to "agree with [the] adversary quickly" (Matt. 5:25)—only long enough to recognize that this was another opportunity to prove that God does heal.
