Have you ever had a weed in your garden that you diligently dug out—with every bit of root you could find—only to have it reappear later? It takes vigorous, repeated efforts to get rid of tough weeds, doesn't it!
I found self-justification to be such a weed in my mental garden. At first I didn't even know it was there. But once I noticed it, I saw it all over the place. It popped up everywhere! No matter what I was doing, it was there.
Self-justification is surely one of the most miserable weeds we have to eradicate from our thought. It promises what it can't deliver and brings with it instead all sorts of mental and physical suffering. But how can we get rid of it? It can seem indestructible!
