The stillness of prayer, the activity of Christ

From the August 1990 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I was a little girl of eight, a loving neighbor heard that nothing more could be done to alleviate the intense pain I was suffering from mastoiditis. But she did something about it. She reached out. She knocked at our door and asked my mother if she could pray for me in Christian Science. That night my ears drained and I was completely healed. The Christ had come into our home.

Christ, Truth, is as active in consciousness today as it was when John recorded the Christ message in the book of Revelation: "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." Rev. 3:20.

I often think of this loving neighbor who brought Christian Science to a family where four generations have now reaped its rich blessings. I think of her confidence in God's healing power. But mostly I treasure the expectant prayer that undoubtedly preceded her courageous call, paving the way to a receptive heart waiting inside the door.
