Following Christ "without a word"

From the August 1990 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the Christian Science Hymnal there's a hymn adapted from a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier that counsels us to follow the disciples' example in our response to Christ. One stanza reads:

In simple trust like theirs who heard,
Beside the Syrian sea,
The gracious calling of the Lord,
Let us, like them, without a word
Rise up and follow thee. Hymnal, No. 49.

The Christ-spirit attributed to the disciples in this poem stands in stark contrast to the attitude of the Pharisees of Jesus' time. They argued with him at every step. They could have accepted his gentle, healing teachings, though these teachings did rebuke the self-serving views of those arguing. Instead, they chose to "fill [their] mouth[s] with arguments," Job 23:4. as Job says.
