Pain and swelling in hands healed

From the July 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE FOLLOWING healing marked an important step in my spiritual growth and understanding. As a child I attended a Christian Science Sunday School, where God's love for all His children was taught each Sunday; and I have always felt that through prayer, God does answer our every need. I have had proof of this care on many occasions, including physical healings and the resolution of business challenges and relationship difficulties. I know that meeting and marrying my husband was the result of prayer. And I am so grateful to him, for although he is not a Christian Scientist, he is supportive of my study and practice of this religion.

At the first of January of last year, I was called to aid a longtime family friend who had become ill. The situation was very stressful, and a great many of the details fell to me to handle. On Monday morning in the third week in January, after a particularly trying weekend, I woke with my hands feeling numb and in pain. I called a Christian Science practitioner to ask her to pray for me. My hands improved somewhat, so that I was able to go ahead with the activities I had planned for that day, but they weren't healed. I continued in regular contact with the practitioner. We discussed the fact that nothing could take my peace away from me because it had a spiritual basis and could not be disturbed by another person's situation or behavior.

As time went on, certain decisions had to be made that increased my feeling of burden. My hands did not improve, but got worse. I also had pain in the muscles of my legs when I stood up, and cramping in my legs and feet during the night. Many nights I would wake in pain, and I was particularly grateful for the inspiring tapes that are published by The Christian Science Publishing Society.
