Lives Inspired by Mary Baker Eddy’s Example

Our oneness with God

From the April 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I’d be lost without Mary Baker Eddy and her discovery of Christian Science. It’s not an overstatement. My career, my family, and more physical healings than I can count are all the direct result of her discovery of Christian Science. More important, how I pray, my understanding of who I am, and how I live my life are based on these scientific teachings as discovered, explained, and exemplified by Mrs. Eddy.

For instance, six years ago I experienced the power of the weekly Christian Science Bible Lesson in an unforgettable way. This particular morning, I’d spent hours reading the Lesson, just soaking in and loving each of its truths. I remember feeling especially close to God, and just reveling in “a priceless sense of the dear Father’s loving-kindness” (Science and Health, p. 366).

When I got up, however, I tripped and banged my toe into a cupboard with considerable force, eliciting a crack and intense pain. I stood still, mentally reaching out to God. Several angel messages came directly to thought, one from that week’s Lesson: “He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken” (Ps. 34:20). Almost immediately I felt a distinct shift in my toe and the pain disappeared. I realized I’d broken or dislocated my toe, but it was now healed. I rejoiced! I knew the closeness I’d felt with God was key to this instantaneous healing—and while I’m grateful for the healing, the nearness to God that I felt is the most memorable part of the experience.
