One Wednesday evening, after answering a late phone call, I decided to attend a Christian Science branch church that was about five minutes from my home. The readings were inspiring and uplifting. But an unusual situation arose.
During the second hymn, it came very strongly that I should leave the church service right then. Never before had such a directive come to me—and with such force. So, right after the completion of the second hymn, I left. I went to my car, which was across the street from the church, and sat there saying: OK, Father, I have come this far. What’s next? I started the car and was led to go to the corner. Then, I turned around and went back to the church where a parking spot was waiting for me. I got out of the car and walked toward the church entrance.
In the darkness, there was the shadow of a young woman all bowed over, sitting on a small side entrance step to the church. My heart and prayers went out to her.
I asked her if I could do anything for her. She told me that she could not move very well and was in much pain. I spoke to her quietly and told her that she was God’s beloved child and she was in His kingdom, right then. I asked her if she would like to come with me and go into this church. I extended my hand and helped her get up. We very slowly walked into the church and sat down and listened to a testifier who was speaking.
