Of Good Report

Gathering together to “fight the good fight”

From the June 2020 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Our branch Church of Christ, Scientist, regularly prays for our community. We were interested to hear of a special conference for clergy and people of faith who were in recovery themselves and were keenly dedicated to helping address drug addiction and the opioid crisis. We asked the organizers if it would be appropriate for our church to participate, and they said, Yes, come.

So we did. We knew that the predominant theological view of the denominations represented at the conference was invested in the Adam and Eve story of creation in Genesis. And we knew that the predominant view of recovery differed from the Christian Science view in that it saw addiction as something to be managed, not cured. And yet, we were welcomed!

Christian Science teaches from the first biblical record of creation in Genesis that we are all the wholly spiritual children of God, made in His image and likeness. Through this understanding, and following Christ Jesus’ words and works, many have found cures of a wide variety of ailments, including addiction.
