Whether our schools, office buildings, and churches have reopened their physical doors, are reopening, or hope to, we have the opportunity for deep, consecrated prayer. Wherever our individual nation or state is during this period, there are many important topics to consider, including, What are the official requirements we must abide by? and, How do we demonstrate harmony among those who participate?
In praying for my local church and the extended community, I have found great comfort and guidance by turning to two precious books that serve as the pastor of The Church of Christ, Scientist: the Holy Bible, and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I find these resources never cease to illuminate the Word of God, which is “a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalms 119:105).
For instance, the Bible shares that when Jesus’ disciples continued to spread his ministry after his ascension, several communities around the Mediterranean were trying to figure out how to organize churches for their beloved faith. And, not so differently from today, various congregations felt unsettled and divided about coming together. In Rome, the topic of circumcision was one of the issues of the day. Among the Jews who were adopting this new faith, there were those who felt very strongly that to show faith, men who wanted to participate in church must follow this mandate given to Abraham. On the other side, people asserted that this restriction shouldn’t be applied anymore. There were men who had a great desire to practice their new Christian faith and felt that they should be welcomed into the church just as they were. So it was quite a tumultuous time.
