High school is now a distant memory of friendships, social gatherings, homework, and athletics. I competed in wrestling, football, and track, but one day I began experiencing symptoms of a hernia.
I was raised in Christian Science but asked my mom to take me to see a doctor, who diagnosed the condition as a hernia and recommended surgery. I asked if it would just eventually go away on its own, and he reaffirmed his belief in the need for surgery to remedy the problem.
I was struck with fear, but my mom wasn’t intimidated by the diagnosis and said she would pray. Our family had experienced many wonderful healings through Christian Science, including of dog bites, broken bones, bee stings, and childhood diseases, and my mom understood that this condition had no spiritual basis, either.
