God has a place for every one of us—a right home, companionship, fulfilling work, a satisfying purpose—and nothing can keep us from these. The Bible says, “Behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it” (Revelation 3:8).
I had an opportunity to prove this many years ago, when my husband was entering officers’ training in the military. We had just come from a three-year tour of duty in beautiful Hawaii, and we needed to find suitable housing for ourselves and our two small children. This was a temporary (six-month) stay, so we had only our hold baggage to tide us over for the duration, and we needed to find a furnished place we could afford.
Our lengthy housing search led to one dead end after another. I felt discouraged and frustrated. The dingy and dilapidated barracks building where we were staying felt like such a depressing departure from our recent lovely surroundings in Hawaii. Before bed one night, I desperately asked God, “What are we doing here? Why have You brought us to this place?”
