Throughout Mary Baker Eddy’s writings, a central message is that God’s idea, man—you, me, and everyone—has no material origin or components. This truth is explained clearly in “the scientific statement of being” in her primary text on Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which begins: “There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter” (p. 468).
Understanding this concept can sometimes seem like a huge mental stretch. We look around and see that everything appears to be material. But the first chapter of Genesis relates that God called everything He had made very good. This good, spiritual creation is the only one that we can actually experience.
