Who will be my teacher?

From the June 2022 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Gratitude overflows to my grandparents and an aunt who accepted Christian Science as their way of life soon after Mary Baker Eddy founded The Church of Christ, Scientist. My relatives were present when Mrs. Eddy gave a well-known address to a crowd from the balcony of her Pleasant View home. Much later, my parents, also students of Christian Science, provided a healthy, harmonious home for my brother and me. We attended Christian Science Sunday School, while our parents were branch church members.

After graduating from college, I realized I wanted to teach Sunday School. Before pursuing this, I felt inspired to have Christian Science Primary class instruction. While prayerfully listening for guidance in finding a Christian Science teacher, I often referred to a quote from Mary Baker Eddy: “The divine Spirit supplies all human needs” (No and Yes, p. 42).

A friend mentioned the name of her teacher, and I felt ready to call her. What an inspiring experience to meet her and learn of her loving expectation of her students. She accepted me for her class that summer. During class instruction, I learned to listen to God and to understand that healing was the revealing of God’s love for all humanity. I was also learning that “the divine Principle of healing is proved in the personal experience of any sincere seeker of Truth” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. x).

It was wonderful how God gave me such clear direction.

Sometime later, I experienced a painful situation in my upper arm. At one point, I decided to call my dear teacher for treatment through prayer. Before I dialed her number, I thought about what I’d learned in class that would remove the pain and fear, and help me feel God’s presence, where there was no room for pain.

While the phone was still ringing, my healing took place; I was free with no pain. My teacher was not available to answer my call. I talked with her later and told her of the healing experience, and she jokingly assured me that there would be no charge! Her humor was much appreciated.

After our teacher was gone and our association disbanded, I desired to be a regular visitor at another association. As I had when first seeking a teacher, I prayed for God’s guidance.

A letter from a friend told me of a Christian Science teacher who had been helping her through prayer. The mention of the teacher’s name inspired me to contact her. Our discussion of Christian Science assured me that I would have continued growth in the spiritual authority of Christian Science in this new association. It was wonderful how God gave me such clear direction. How grateful I am to feel God’s continuing guidance in every part of my life. Our Father-Mother God truly is the teacher of one and all.
