A Christian Science practitioner’s method of healing is purely mental, spiritual, and consists entirely of prayer—specific, Christianly scientific prayer, as Jesus healed. God is the healing power, and healing is proof of His omnipotence. The Christian healer’s statute book is the Holy Bible, and its key is Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
Recently, a college student contemplating career paths asked me, “Exactly when and how did you make the decision to be a Christian Science practitioner?”
“I don’t think I did” was my answer. For me it wasn’t a human decision, but a calling—a calling from God. I remember feeling led. The message was sweet and strong, not scary. Following it felt natural, showing me that my responsiveness was as God-impelled and God-inspired as His calling. As Psalms 40:6 puts it: “You [God] made me willing to listen and obey” (Contemporary English Version).
