Over four years ago, a woman came into our branch church’s Christian Science Reading Room and asked if we had any discussion groups she might join. There was nothing in place yet, but the librarian took the woman’s information and said she would be in touch. This prompted our church’s executive board to authorize starting a discussion group using The Christian Science Monitor as its basis for discussions.
The discussion group continues to thrive, and it is not only offered in the Reading Room, but also at a residential retirement community for Christian Scientists nearby, where it is cohosted by the Reading Room and the retirement center.
Each discussion follows a similar format. A specific article is chosen during the week, and email announcements are sent to a list of participants, including church members, the retirement community, and those who have expressed interest in the activity. Additionally, a flyer is distributed at church and in the retirement community.
