The choice that leads to true happiness

From the June 2026 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Happiness does not come from a series of fortuitous circumstances, fame, sensualism, nor an accumulation of material wealth. History is full of examples of famous and financially successful people whose goals and aspirations were abundantly fulfilled and yet whose cravings for true happiness were never satisfied. Then where does happiness—thoroughly enjoying life here and now—come from?

To be truly and changelessly happy, one cannot base one’s happiness on ever-changing material circumstances or sensations. Christ Jesus gave us the way to experience eternal happiness in the Beatitudes (see Matthew 5), which instruct us how to be blessed. Blessedness is happiness unrelated to material circumstances and sensations, but instead based upon understanding one’s unchanging relation to divine Love, God. The way is to express only divine qualities in your daily walk.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, explains, “For true happiness, man must harmonize with his Principle, divine Love” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 337).
