Testimonies of Healing
Over four years ago I turned to Christian Science for help, after being told by the doctors that my boy could not live six months without another operation, and that even then he had but one chance in a hundred. At the age of three years the doctors had said he had tuberculosis of the hip bone.
During all my life our family had been subject to all sorts of ills, such as colds, tonsillitis, grippe, fevers, malaria, typhoid, quinsy, severe headaches, liver trouble, and many other ailments. A neighbor once said he thought we hired the doctor by the year, he came so often and so regularly! In 1919, when I first knew of Christian Science, I had been a medical nurse for a number of years and was filled with great fear regarding what the future held in store for me.
Several years ago I witnessed a friend's healing of influenza simply through her reading of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. She seemed so ill, yet steadfastly refused medical aid, and I became quite indignant with her, even asking her husband why he did not call a doctor.
In 1913 I was suffering from a nervous breakdown which culminated in epileptic fits. A dear friend told me of Christian Science when I was in despair and felt I should never regain health.
At the age of fourteen, when apparently a healthy youngster, I awoke one morning with an uncomfortable mist over my left eye. Later that day, upon closing my right eye, I noticed that I had completely lost the vision of the left and could detect nothing, save the sense of a moving object passing in front of me.
Often when I have felt the need of rest and comfort the testimonies of healing in the periodicals and in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, have furnished a rich, abiding sense of the joy and gratitude which heal so quickly. Several years ago I was riding alone.
Words cannot express my gratitude for Christian Science and what it has done and is doing in my home; for the wonderful unfoldment of the Bible teachings; also to Mrs. Eddy for her beautiful and clear interpretation of the Bible.
What I deemed for years unjust persecution, indignities of dishonesty and disloyalty, also rigid bondage to person and place,—thoughts which resulted in bodily suffering,—proved indeed to be angels entertained unawares; for while I was earnestly praying to our Father one evening, while prostrate in suffering, there came to my consciousness the soft-winged dove of peace, as if to assure me that there was a God watching over me, that He heard my cry, and that divine help was near. Very soon a friend presented me with a very old edition of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
Profound and sincere gratitude prompts me to write this testimony of a most wonderful and beautiful proof of the power of Truth. From earliest childhood I suffered from an internal trouble, which grew worse from year to year, until at last paralysis of the bowels set in.
It was in the year 1906 that I first became interested in Christian Science through a dear sister's healing of nervous prostration. For a long time I was unwilling to quit my reliance on medicine, and one day I told a practitioner that I was ashamed of my lack of faith in God to heal me without material remedies.
