Testimonies of Healing

Each time I receive a new Journal or Sentinel , I turn first to the testimonies of healing. Several times the reading of these has benefited me in the overcoming of some difficulty which at the moment was harassing me.

For a number of years I sought healing in Christian Science for various physical ailments, with slight success, and like many, whom I have heard make the remark after a similar experience, I thought it was "not for me," however much others might have benefited. Material means had all been exhausted before I turned to Science, which I thought was only some method of healing to replace medical treatment.

I became interested in Christian Science soon after my wife started to study it. I had to admit that Christian Science was doing her good, though I qualified the admission with the thought that religion was a good thing for women but was not meant for men.

My son was seriously ill with what doctors called tuberculosis. They told me he could not get well; and, indeed, gave him only two days to live.

One May day my little daughter then about six years old, in company with her schoolmate, went into a field to pick strawberries. There were mules in the field.

I write this testimony with love to God and gratitude for what Christian Science has done for me. In the winter of 1927 I was taken with a severe cold, which developed into pneumonia.

It is several years since the glorious truths of Christian Science were presented to me, and I have long desired to give my testimony of gratitude for the many blessings received. From early childhood I had a strong belief in the power of evil, along with intense fear.

Nineteen years ago I suffered from bronchial asthma, an internal displacement for which I wore a support, constipation, and general debility and nervousness. At that time there was one student of Christian Science in Rocky Mount who, hearing of my need, sent me some copies of The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel.

When Christian Science first came to my notice I had been suffering and in ill health for many years. I was miserable and depressed, continually grieving that I should have become such a burden to my husband.

The words of the poet Milton, "Hence, loathed melancholy," often found echo in my heart as I struggled to free myself from the visitor that so persistently drew down all the shades of my mental home and made it a chamber chill, dark, and dreary. The "shadow" of melancholy darkened my consciousness for years, but now I am grateful to bear witness to the power of Christian Science to bring light to the mind and joy to the heart.
