Testimonies of Healing
Our little girl of two years suddenly became very ill; and in the morning about five o'clock, she had a spasm and apparently was passing on. Up to this time my wife and I were alone in our work for her in Christian Science.
One afternoon I was in the backyard having my hair cleansed with gasoline, some of which seeped into one ear, causing much distress. I went into the house to get some cotton to put into my ear to prevent any more trouble of that kind.
In the year 1909 I attended my first Christian Science service. I was led to look into this teaching because of the harmony I saw it had brought into the lives of some friends.
With sincere gratitude to God for giving us a knowledge of the Christ, Truth, through Christian Science, I am sending my testimony, in the hope that it may prove helpful to others. The statement that "man's extremity is God's opportunity," proved to be a correct statement in my case.
It is nearly nineteen years since I first turned to Christian Science for help, in a time of great need. I can never be grateful enough that I was led to take this step.
I began to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, after several years of bad health, and the depressing circumstances succeeding five operations of a serious nature. For one period of ten months my diet had consisted of patent food and jelly; and for another period of twenty months a stomach pump was in daily use.
One night I awakened with intense suffering. I worked, as Christian Science teaches us, for myself until morning; while I grew no worse, I felt no better.
I can never be grateful enough for Christian Science; for it came to me at a time when everything seemed dark, and all earthly hopes had fled. Our only child, a little daughter, was given up by two doctors to die of cholera infantum.
Christian Science was first presented to me at a time when I was weary and heavy-laden with worry over the physical condition of a member of my family. I was invited to attend a Wednesday evening service in the Christian Science church: and, like one grasping at a straw in his extremity, I was ready and willing to turn to anything that offered relief.
With a deep sense of gratitude to God and to Mrs. Eddy, I should like to testify to the great blessings which the teachings of Christian Science have brought to my family and me.
