Testimonies of Healing
Words would fail me to express my gratitude for the many blessings I have received through Christian Science. It came to me when I was sorely in need of help, in what seemed to me the first real grief I ever knew, and although I had been a member of a church for twenty-three years I never knew God until after taking up the study of Christian Science.
It was in Paris, six years ago, that I first heard of Christian Science, and I am ashamed to have let so much time pass without expressing publicly my deep gratitude and thankfulness for the healings and help I have received. I have been protected and strengthened in every danger and difficulty since I knew about this saving truth.
My healing was most remarkable inasmuch as in one absent treatment from a Christian Science practitioner I was healed of a disease said to be peculiar, and pronounced incurable by medical science. I had lived in an extremely high altitude for several years, but was apparently in perfect health, when after an illness of only a few days a disease developed which baffled the most skilled physicians.
During the lifetime that it has been my privilege to spend under the protecting care of Christian Science I have had many healings, both physical and moral, that are truly miracles of Love. It would be impossible to recount here all the healings that God wrought for me in childhood; and in the later and more trying years of schooling which followed, that same protection has been with me, removing mental and physical limitations of all kinds and directing me to an enlarged understanding of God.
Several years ago I had all the hospital training necessary to make me a fully qualified nurse, so that I might help the sick and suffering as much as possible; but when all that medical knowledge had been gained I found it did not help as I expected, and there seemed so many hopeless cases that it made me sad and disappointed. As time went on I longed for something which would really help, not just one case here and there, but every one.
In the fall of 1893 I was healed of an organic trouble through Christian Science. At that time my father was very heavily involved financially, and it looked as if the prediction that he would die a pauper was about to come true.
THE truth that man is spiritual, not material, came to me through my experience in Christian Science. For three or four years I had been an invalid, having had several operations.
In May, 1912, when our family physician, the state board of health, and two specialists said I had tubercular disease, I felt that the thing I greatly feared had come upon me. My grandmother, my father, and several other relatives had passed on with this disease, and the fear of heredity was held over me from earliest childhood, as I was always considered very frail and delicate.
It is eight years since I first began the study of Christian Science, which has proven to be one of the greatest blessings I have ever known. I am so grateful for the truth it teaches about man's relation to God; it makes all good come to him here and now.
Christian Science was brought to my notice at a time when I was in a position like that of a ship without a rudder, drifting about aimlessly with every wind that blew. I had been brought up religiously, and had carried out all the demands of the church to which I belonged, in the matter of church attendance, and so forth; but as the years went on and various discordant conditions appeared in my life, I found my religion insufficient and inadequate to help me overcome all these trials.
