Five years ago Christian Science was presented to me, at a time when in the sorest trouble. Our second boy was very ill with tuberculosis of the throat, and after six months' medical treatment under our doctor he was ordered to undergo an operation which was a very serious one. This my husband and I very much dreaded and tried in every way to avoid. Just before the operation was to have been carried out, I was asked by a friend if I would try Christian Science. I knew nothing about it, having never heard of it. My husband and I, being members of a Baptist church, were not much interested in movements outside our own denomination. But we eagerly read a copy of The Christian Science Journal the friend left us, and finding nothing we could take exception to, we agreed to have Christian Science help. I shall never forget the first talk I had with the practitioner, who told me that God is Love, and that Love could not desire children to suffer disease, and could and would heal all who would come to Him for healing.
Through the loving practitioner's words I gained a new concept of man's relationship to God, and on her assuring me that she would give my boy treatment, my fear for him left me. As he was only thirteen years old, I was compelled by law to keep him under medical treatment; so the next day I took him to the local clinic. Here the doctor said he would have to operate. I did not wish an operation to take place, but I seemed powerless to move or speak as I saw the instruments and the boy being made ready. When he was about to begin, I saw the doctor suddenly stop, put down the instruments, and tell the nurse to retire. Coming to me he asked if I had called to him, but it was not I who had called, for I had not spoken. When Isaac was bound on the altar of sacrifice, did not Abraham hear a voice saying, "Lay not thine hand upon the lad"? He said he could not operate then, but would another time. I am very grateful that when on the next visit he made his examination he found nothing to operate on and wanted to know what I had been doing, declaring he could not understand the case at all. Our boy was healed, and has never been ill since. He is a fine, healthy boy, a Sunday school scholar, earnestly studying Christian Science for himself.
Our eldest son has been healed of a bronchial trouble he had had for fifteen years. I cannot sufficiently express my gratitude for these healings, but I am even more grateful for the spiritual understanding that has come to me through the study of Christian Science. I have indeed proved the truth of the Scriptures, which say that ''ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
