"TRUTH is God's remedy for error of every kind," writes Mrs. Eddy on pages 142 and 143 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "and Truth destroys only what is untrue." Few, surely, will take exception to that statement, which we see illustrated in a very simple way in the correcting of mistakes in arithmetic by numerical facts. Thus, suppose a child should believe that twice four is nine, how would the error be corrected? By the child's knowing that twice four is eight. The truth about twice four destroys the error. The same holds throughout all the experiences of everyday life: if at any time we should believe something to be true which is not true about someone or something, the erroneous belief can be corrected only as we know the truth about that concerning which the lie is told.
Christian Science uses the word "truth" capitalized as a synonym for God. God is Truth. And since God is Truth—infinite Truth—it of necessity follows that all that is of God, all that has its origin or source in God, is true or real; also, that whatever is not of God. whatever has not its origin in God, is not true or real. But how, it may be asked, are we to know what is of God? How are we to distinguish that which has its origin in God, and is true or real, from that which does not originate in Him and is untrue or unreal? A sure test of reality is that it is perfect, changeless, indestructible, harmonious, good. It cannot possibly be otherwise, since God, its source, is infinite good.
At this point does it not become plain that, even as Christian Science teaches, there can be naught but harmony in existence, since God, good, is infinite; naught but truth in existence, since Truth is infinite? And, further, it should be clear that the fact that Truth is infinite rules out completely the belief that there can in reality be any error anywhere. Through its inspired textbook and Mrs. Eddy's other writings, as well as through the other authorized literature of the Christian Science movement, Christian Science is steadfastly declaring that God is infinite and that Truth alone is present.
