CHURCH BUILDING AND MAINTENANCE

From the November 1932 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE Church of Christ, Scientist, with its fruitful branches spreading all over the civilized world, is an inspiring proof of the healing and regenerating power of Christian Science. The commodious church edifices and halls which provide places of worship where the multitudes may congregate to hear the Word of God and learn more of the divine healing Principle, continue to multiply. With this ever increasing evidence of spiritual progress the question must sooner or later arise in the heart of every Christian Scientist, Am I doing my full share in maintaining and extending this great and growing movement? When this question has been squarely faced a beginning has been made, and ways and means of usefulness will surely unfold according to individual abilities and opportunities, and in proportion to the strength and purity of one's desire.

As Mary Baker Eddy first discovered the divine Principle of Christian Science and then founded the organization through which it is now being made available throughout the world, it is evident that her followers must also first gain an understanding of her teachings, through study of her published writings, and then give proof of their faith by works. In this endeavor Christian Scientists are responding to the call of their Leader when she wrote(Miscellaneous Writings, p.207), "Drink with me the living waters of the spirit of my life-purpose, —to impress humanity with the genuine recognition of practical, operative Christian Science." The acceptance of this invitation is enabling them not only to believe more fully, but to understand and demonstrate the teachings of Christ Jesus, the Way-shower; and thus they are fulfilling the Master's own test of discipleship, "If ye love me, keep my commandments."

Mrs. Eddy saw and taught that true substance is divine Mind or Love, and that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p.494). It is on this spiritual foundation that The Mother Church, in Boston, with all of its allied activities, including every branch church throughout the world, is established and will endure.
