[As published in the Christian Science Sentinel, October 4, 1941]
Inquiries which have been received indicate that some explanation should be given with regard to the opportunity presented by the United States Treasury for investment in government bonds. As indicated in the statement "From the Directors" which appeared in the Sentinel of August 23, 1941, on this subject, Christian Science churches and societies do not engage in promoting financial programs. That is, they do not, at their services or otherwise, urge their adherents to invest money in either public or private enterprises, although under existing circumstances it would be in order for them to make available the printed information furnished by the Treasury Department regarding the Defense Stamps and Bonds.
In addition to making available an opportunity for its employees to purchase Defense (Postal) Savings Stamps, The Mother Church has through its Treasurer purchased bonds for the current year up to the fullest extent permitted to any one purchaser by the rules of the Treasury Department. If a branch church or society has funds which are not needed for use currently or at some time in the near future, it is privileged to invest such funds in the purchase of government bonds or in such other high grade securities as it may be properly authorized to invest church funds.
