A false sense of existence as material implies dependence on matter for life and happiness. This delusion obscures man's spiritual nature and heritage. Jesus said, "How hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!" A love of material things is the door of self-indulgence, shutting out spiritual aspiration and attainment.
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy says (p. 494): "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need. It is not well to imagine that Jesus demonstrated the divine power to heal only for a select number or for a limited period of time, since to all mankind and in every hour, divine Love supplies all good." To rely upon divine Love means to seek God's unfailing provision and prove His tender care. This lesson enables us to forsake matter for Spirit—to exchange the uncertainty of material riches for the substance of our hope and prayers.
Since God is infinite intelligence, the only creator, the real universe consists of spiritual ideas and these He maintains spiritually. His spiritual ideas are forever complete and perfect. Lacking nothing, they eternally evidence God's goodness and care. Corroborating the spiritual fact, as recorded in the Bible, many incidents show God's practical aid to those who rely on Him. The Israelites in the wilderness received, through His directing, meat, manna, and water, and in drought a widow's oil and meal did not fail.
