THE ETERNAL REFUGE

From the November 1941 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is our God given heritage to be safe from the world's disturbing influences, through demonstrating the omnipresence and omnipotence of God, infinite good, in whom "we live, and move, and have our being." In our daily pursuits, conditions may be encountered that induce fear and discouragement. To the human senses, the situation may seem real and at times aggressive in its claim for recognition. But the false testimony of material sense can be summarily rejected through the spiritual understanding of God, as revealed in Christian Science. The great truth of spiritual being never changes and is ever available as a refuge from the erring material senses.

Spiritual apprehension dispels the night of gloom and unfolds the day of light and peace. The Psalmist said: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof." Aggressive phases of earthly vicissitudes seem to be sin, disease, want, war, death. This testimony of the erring material senses is stilled by the knowledge of the presence and power of divine Mind, ready to shield from "the fiery darts of the wicked," from all the false claims of materiality.

"A new heaven and a new earth," entirely apart from earthly trouble, are revealed in Christian Science. This spiritual consciousness reflects divine Truth, wherein there is no fear —nothing to affect God's all inclusive kingdom of spiritual peace. Into the spiritual, real universe the thunderbolts of error cannot enter. The alert student knows he cannot be moved in his consciousness of things eternal.
