Repeatedly throughout the writings of Mary Baker Eddy we find that she specifically outlines the footsteps that must be taken in our progress out of the material dream of life up to the ultimate spiritual state of being.
Mrs. Eddy definitely states in "Unity of Good" (p. 60), "Christ cannot come to mortal and material sense, which sees not God." The first step toward our goal, then, is to attain and maintain that state of consciousness which is receptive to the Christ. A careful study of Mrs. Eddy's article, "The New Birth" (Miscellaneous Writings, pp. 15–20), reveals clearly the footsteps in the transforming process of thought as it mounts upward to more spiritual heights.
The Christianization of our thought comes first. To this purified human consciousness comes the revelation that God is Life. As ideas of infinite good unfold in our thoughts, we are purged of animality and mere physical desires and gain an understanding of being as spiritual. There comes a gradual fading out of the material sense of man as thought develops spiritually.
