My first healing in Christian Science twenty-six years ago, was of tonsillitis. This form of tonsillitis was very severe; it occurred several times during the year, and I had suffered from it since I was a child. The many doctors to whom I went for help gave me no relief. I underwent an operation, but after a few months the attacks returned. At that time I knew practically nothing about Christian Science, except that several of my friends had been healed by its application.
While staying in a suburb of London, I awoke one morning with high fever and the usual painful throat, and thought I was in for another week or more of suffering. The desire came to me so strongly to seek aid in Christian Science that I sought out a Reading Room. The librarian, to whom I told my troubles, lovingly heard me and, seeing my need, took me aside into a room and told me about God and His loving care. I did not understand much of what she said, but she quoted something Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 349): "God is not the author of sickness;" and she added, "Therefore, you do not have to have it."
After a while I left and went home. My landlady helped me undress and go to bed, for I was still very ill. I repeated the words, "'God is not the author of sickness;' therefore, I do not have to have it," and fell asleep. A few hours afterward I awoke, and was surprised to find I could swallow without any difficulty. It did not seem possible. I jumped out of bed, put on the light, and saw that all the swelling, inflammation, and fever had gone. I was healed, and there has never been the slightest return of this complaint.
