Over thirty years ago the best specialists in the state in which I was then living told me that there was absolutely nothing more they could do for me, and the family physician said, "If you were my own wife, I could not do more than I have tried to do for you." The picture that presented itself was most disfiguring and developed a sense of false pride and irritation. It was under these circumstances that a relative, who had just been to her first Christian Science lecture, asked if she might take me to a practitioner. I consented, thinking I could now show my mother-in-law, who was an earnest Scientist, that there was a disease which could not be healed in Science, for I thoroughly believed the doctors.
Having been on the strictest kind of diet, I was surprised when the practitioner told me to eat whatever I wanted. I shall never forget the wonderful light that filled my consciousness that first day. I compared it to the experience Paul had on the road to Damascus. I immediately went to my overstocked medicine closet and threw away every type of medicine, even the eyeglass and the temperature thermometer. This cooperation of honesty and obedience established a firm foundation, and in the years to come was the means of my being able to withstand sickness, sorrow, and persecution. The specific difficulty for which I had asked help yielded slowly, in proportion to my putting off "the old man." The responsibility of a large family kept me, burdened as I was by the physical condition, in a nervous state. When I told the practitioner these troubles she remarked, "When your thought is in order, your house will be in order." From that day I commenced to see the different situations as mental, until the healing was completed.
I am more than grateful that I had class instruction at an early date, for the contacts with my teacher saved me from many a pitfall. An impediment in my speech was healed the night I was selected as Second Reader in a branch church. Chapped hands, from which one of my children was suffering, were instantly healed when the condition had gotten to the stage where the backs of the hands were cracked and bleeding. In all these years creams and lotions have never been used or needed.
