It has been thirty years since I first felt the healing and regenerating power of Christian Science. According to medical law, I was doomed from my birth because of inherited neuralgia and weak lungs. Fear kept me waiting and watching for the end, although I sometimes wondered how God could let me suffer, since I learned in my Sunday school lessons that He is Love. If I got my feet wet even with dew, or there was any change of the weather, the complaint would cause suffering for days and sometimes weeks.
Then I met a friend who told me that he had been completely healed of heart trouble by Christian Science treatment. It sounded to me like a mystery, but I opened my thought to receive what seemed to me a very strange remedy, and he gave me a little pamphlet to read called "Prayer and Healing," issued by The Christian Science Publishing Society. I asked him where he had bought the pamphlet, and he directed me to a Christian Science Reading Room. I went there at once, and met such a loving reception that I spent some hours reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. In a very short time I borrowed the book and began to study it. I read the chapter on Prayer twice, and began to feel there was hope for me.
Shortly afterward, I got wet in the rain one day, but went home that night and had a good night's rest. I knew something remarkable had occurred, for I had not taken my medicine. I did not experience any suffering. Then I felt the first great joy of my life. I told my family I had found something I had been needing all my life. They were very much surprised at my words and could not understand what had taken place. I began studying the Bible with Science and Health. One day I read the ninth chapter of St. John, where the disciples of Jesus asked him who had sinned, the blind man or his parents, and Jesus answered, "Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him." As I read, the lifelong fear of inherited disability dropped away, and the truth about God was revealed in my consciousness. I had been healed through the reading of the Bible and Science and Health.
