I should like to testify to the efficacy of Christian Science. I was stricken with a pain at the base of my spine so severe that I could neither sit nor lie down without distress. I had my wife call a physician, who came and gave me a prescription to have filled. I took the medicine for about a week, during which I had no relief. All this time I had very little sleep.
Late one night, when I was suffering much pain, my wife lovingly offered to work for me in Christian Science. Although I had previously refused such help, I was now ready to accept it. She read to me from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but I was moaning in pain so much that I scarcely heard her. Finally she asked, "Are you really willing to be healed?" This question arrested my attention, for I thought that there should be no question about my willingness to be healed.
She explained that sometimes we seek only relief and not true healing. This causes us to resort to material means, thus weakening our trust in God. The relief given by drugs, she said, may leave the patient no better morally than he was before, but spiritual healing benefits the patient physically and morally. I saw that it was healing, not relief, that I needed. She then asked me to be thoroughly inhospitable to all suggestions presented by the physical senses, and I agreed to do this. Although I had previously been unable to rest, I went to sleep almost at once. When I awakened the next morning I was completely well except for a slight weakness, which soon disappeared.
