MAN IS NOT CORPOREAL

From the February 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is still the predominant belief of mankind that man is material. Indeed, the sources of information on which mortals have relied—the physical senses—have never ceased to declare this to be the fact. Accustomed to accepting this evidence of the physical senses, even the seeker for the truth in the Bible may not at first be easily convinced that man is spiritual. Yet, if he really desires to succeed in his search for the true cause of existence, he must not only accept but clearly understand this fundamental truth.

The recognition of perfect God, Spirit, and of man as His image is the essential element in the solution of all problems which confront and perplex mankind. On page 468 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy concludes "the scientific statement of being" with the words, "Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual."

Perfect God, Spirit, and His perfect expression, spiritual man, constitute the truth of being which is the fundamental premise for all reasoning in divine metaphysics. It is of course easier to talk of Spirit and spiritual man than actually to understand the realities behind the terms. We should be content with nothing less than the clearest conception of these truths.
