THERE IS ALWAYS ENOUGH

From the February 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

No composer would hesitate to write a symphony because he feared a deficiency of musical notes would render ineffective his great work. He knows that notes are symbols of ideas, and ideas are infinite. Therefore he can never lack all he needs, for there is always enough.

So mankind should never have a suspicion or a fear that at some time there may not be enough to meet all their needs. Material supplies are but symbols of infinite divine ideas and, when rightly understood as such, cannot be depleted or lost. Man is the compound idea of God, Spirit. He is composed of all the essential qualities of Life, Truth, and Love. His sole reason for being is to bear witness to these qualities, to image forth the perfection and completeness of God. Man expresses unlimited substance and reflects infinite resources. Can more be added? Can anything be lacking in completeness? The understanding of this reflected self-containment, or self-completeness, enables one to destroy all sense of poverty or lack and replace it with the joy of abundance, the freedom of abundant living.

The experiences of Moses and the children of Israel in their travels from Egypt to the promised land reveal many practical evidences of this abundance. One incident is told of a time when they were without water and the children of Israel became angry and murmured against Moses. Then Moses prayed and was guided to cast a certain tree into the bitter waters of Marah which, sweetening them, made them fit to drink. For their food in the wilderness God sent quail in the evening and manna in the morning. A most interesting requirement regarding the gathering of the manna was that they were to gather just enough for each day's needs, except on the sixth day, when they were to gather twice that amount in order to provide for the Sabbath. Those who hoarded found that hoarding did not pay, for all the manna that was not used on the day it was gathered immediately spoiled.
