It is related that when the beloved John returned to Ephesus from his exile on the island of Patmos, the early Christians gathered round him constantly, urging him to tell them of the Master's teachings. And he would repeat these words, which he attributed to the Master: "Little children, love one another."
Love was the cornerstone of all Jesus' teachings, love for God and love for man. Love for God and love for man are one; that is, they are inseparable. The cornerstone of the teachings of Christian Science is love for God and love for man. It is the guiding star of the Christian Scientist. It is his remedy for error of every name and nature, his armor, his weapon, and his means of defense.
In his three epistles John, the beloved disciple, dwells at length on the subject of love. In I John he writes (4:20), "He that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?" Thus John makes clear that love for God must be expressed in love for man. With inspired vision he points to the origin, the source, of this love. He reveals its divine nature and its ever-presence when he says (4:19), "We love him, because he first loved us."
