"CONCEPTION UNCONFINED"

From the February 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The true unconfined concept of existence is learned of God, for the Mind which conceives and comprehends the universe and all reality is God. God is the sole Principle of all that exists, the origin of all ideas. God is Mind, intelligence itself; hence He is the very substance of those ideas. Understanding God as the basis of all real creation sets men free to know God's boundless concept of the universe. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 323): "Beholding the infinite tasks of truth, we pause,—wait on God. Then we push onward, until boundless thought walks enraptured, and conception unconfined is winged to reach the divine glory."

Biblical writers frequently wrote of God as the only creator of the universe, and Jesus referred constantly to God as his Father. In Isaiah we read (45:11, 12): "Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded."

We need to understand that divine Mind, which is Love eternal, presents unfoldment as the essential nature of creation. An idea which unfolds is already existent; in fact, unfoldment implies eternal existence. Nothing is new to infinite Mind. If anything could ever be new to Mind, then there would have been a time when Mind, God, was less than infinite, less than a perfect whole. But Mind acts through infinite law and cannot be thought of as less than infinite and complete. We read in Ecclesiastes (3:15), "That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past." The process of creation is the infinite unfoldment of all that already exists.
