Testimonies of Healing

Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes in Science and Health...

From the July 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes in Science and Health (p. 369), "The prophylactic and therapeutic (that is, the preventive and curative) arts belong emphatically to Christian Science, as would be readily seen, if psychology, or the Science of Spirit, God, was understood." In the fifty years that the truths revealed by this Science have met my every need, its prophylactic or preventive art has been outstanding in my experience. Difficulties of various kinds have been mastered, but the need for physical healing has been very rare.

Several years ago, however, I became very ill. A practitioner was called, but the condition did not immediately yield. Since it was thought that the disease might be of a contagious nature, it was reported to the health department. A physician diagnosed the condition as typhus fever and said that because of his respect for my religion, he would not offer any suggestions for medication, but would call occasionally.

Every single phase of this disease was completely reversed through Christian Science treatment. There was no period of convalescence, and when the doctor made his last call, he said that he wanted me to inform the practitioner that my recovery had been two weeks sooner than that of any other case of typhus fever which had been reported to the health department up to that time.

Another healing occurred more recently. At that time I was engaged in work that could not be delegated to another, and I simply could not let myself be incapacitated. One night after retiring I awakened about midnight in extreme pain. I found it impossible to treat myself; so I called a practitioner.

During the ensuing hours, I called the practitioner three times with no apparent relief, but as I ascended the stairs for the third time, returning to my room, I paused on the landing. A statement read that afternoon from a testimony in the Christian Science Sentinel came clearly to my thought. It was to the effect that demonstration is the proving of man's oneness, or unity, with God.

In that moment I had a sense of my true oneness with God, and before I placed my foot on the next step, I was completely free. I went to bed and slept well. The next day I carried on my duties as usual. This instantaneous healing meant much to me.

I am grateful that every day I am catching clearer glimpses of God through the light of the truth revealed by Christian Science. In my experience as a Christian Science nurse, I have ever been grateful for the presence of Mind, which has shown me the next step in various situations. Many times I have felt God's guidance as clearly as if I had heard the words (Isa. 30:21), "This is the way, walk ye in it," and as I went forward each step unfolded.

I am grateful to God for Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, who has shown us that we can prove our unity with the Father, and I am grateful to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, whose writings make spiritual truth so practical, available, and demonstrable. The avenues in our movement through which the Christ, Truth, comes to us are additional cause for gratitude.—
